Music CDs and Memory

My husband’s decided he’s going to take his vast CD collection and convert it to the computer and keep it either on flash memory or a USB flash drive. In the past few months we’ve lost a lot of CDs to the munchkin and the tile floor, and also to a soda spill that seeped into one of the CD notebooks and stuck a lot of them together. Plus, hubbie likes to be able to plug the music in to the xBox and listen to it while he’s playing video games and he can’t do that if it’s on CD.

I’m not sure which would be better, although given his track record with losing things I’m leaning towards the flash drive, although it couldn’t hurt to get another flash memory card when we have extra time and use it for the digital camera.

I’m actually for this conversion because it will save us a lot of space. We have tons of CD spindles and CD cases all over the house, and it takes forever to find things because it’s hard to keep them in order because they’ll get upended or knocked over or placed back on the wrong spindle and whatever else.

I’m working on reorganizing the living room/dining room/computer area right now. I have another shelf to put together, but that’s not going to help with the CD organization.

Aren’t soda spills the best? I once got a bunch of sticky, mysterious crap all over a bunch of CDs in envelopes, and to this day I have NO IDEA where it came from. They were sitting on a shelf, and there was nothing liquid above them. I had to pull out the entire collection and clean them all with rubbing alcohol. That was a fun afternoon.

I’ve been cleaning them with baby wipes, but still some of them haven’t been coming clean. I’ll try the rubbing alcohol.
Some of them are so scratched we’ll have to re-buy or something when we have the funds; but hopefully I can save a few more.
