New Review: Travian

July 7th, 2008

I spoke before about the game Travian and how much fun it was, and perhaps it would have continued to be fun for me if I was still on the regular server, but I got bored with how long it was taking to do anything on that server and signed up for the speed server. This was a bad move on my part for several reasons…I was new to the game and didn’t understand exactly what it was about. I thought it was just a fun build game, but apparently it’s a strategy game, and a war game…and if you’re not sure what is best way to build you wind up at a disadvantage very quickly as you’re being picked apart by other players who have been playing longer.

I’m sure the same is true for any real time game such as World of Warcraft or anything else, but the other problem is that especially on the speed server you really can’t leave your account alone for any length of time otherwise you come back and basically have to rebuild.

Finding alliances are important too because they should help you, but there are lots of in fighting and pettiness within and without alliances and that makes it hard to find one that is strong and will also help you out and teach you what you need to try and grow.

Overall the game is an interesting one but I don’t think I’m going to go back next round. I can’t afford to devote to travian the time that it needs and so it’s no longer a fun game for me it’s becoming a chore, and part of me wants to throw in the towel, but I know that’s a spoiled-brat type of action to do. I’m going to defend my remaining three villages to the end…but right now…I’m just exhausted from the whole thing, and that’s not what I was looking for when I first signed up. I thought it was going to be a fun diversion not an all-consuming chore.

I have this experience with a lot of games – they become a chore at a certain point. I really wish I had the time to devote to something like that, but it’s ultimately more fun to do “chores” that earn real money.

I think I’m just not going to play anything “real time” any more. I’ll just find something turn based or stick to PS2 games or Sims.

Travian is by far the WORST game I’ve played on-line in a long time. As many others have mentioned once a server gets up and running (read as over 2 weeks old) there is no way for any casual gamer (read as someone not willing to pay for Gold) to have any fun. You get farmed from the get go (read as GRIEVED)! It was no fun what-so-ever. I gave it a month of my time, playing casually ever day but using up all my resources and turns. Needless to say all I accomplished was giving other players things (not by choice) and having my crops destroyed and my army decimated. It is by far the WORST game to play casually. DO NOT PLAY TRAVIAN!
