Happy Independence Day

Posted by User ImageAmi-chan on July 4, 2008

Today is my first official Independence Day as an American. I must admit to having mixed feelings about this. I think part of the problem is that my husband is working so apart from a failed attempt to go to a community barbecue this afternoon I haven’t really done anything to celebrate (the munchkin was being too bratty for us to stay until the food was served, but at least we got some to bring home).

My husband is working for the next two days, and while some friends of ours are having a barbecue and setting off fireworks it’s over an hour away and given the munchkin’s performance at the other barbecue I’m very glad that I elected not to make the trek.

Overall it’s been a bit anti-climactic. I’m told that if I search around on the TV I might be able to find somewhere that’s showing the fireworks displays over Washington D.C. I haven’t seen any activity from any of our neighbors so I don’t think they’re doing anything, or they’re doing things out of town, perhaps, so there’s nothing going on in the neighborhood, and given I got woken up at midnight by someone from Virginia calling us for no apparent reason (they didn’t leave a message on the answering machine) I’m not really wanting to go out to anything that might be going on. I’m not even sure if anything is going on. Each of the past years there’ve been threats to cancel local fireworks displays because of the cost, and the possibility of starting wildfires. Florida’s had enough of those over the years.

Maybe I’ll just cook some smores. I feel like I should do something patriotic, but I don’t have the stuff to make an apple pie, and I’m not sure that I have things to make hot dogs either.

Enough rambling for me. I hope everyone else is having a safe and happy Independence Day, and actually doing fun things.

I haven’t been doing much for the 4th in the past few years, either. This year we expected to have a BBQ at the future in-laws house, but my dad-in-law-to-be is apparently tearing the place apart in a futile attempt at organization. There’s no place to actually eat outside, so without a usable dining room, the plan got nixed.

The fiancĂ© and I did go to a nearby lake in the morning, though, to let our dog sniff around in a new place and scout out locations for engagement photos. It was fun, and in the evening we took a picnic to the grassy knoll across the street. No fireworks for us, but there’s nothing wrong with just celebrating in your own way.

    That’s very true.
We’re going to a cook-out at my in-law’s either today or tomorrow depending on how he’s feeling given that hubbie’s actually off work.
