Handfasting Supplies
June 30th, 2008I don’t know if I mentioned on this blog or not but in November I’m going to be officiating a Handfasting for two friends of mine. Planning a handfasting is exactly the same as planning a wedding. They’re sorting out the silk flowers, the invitations, the decorations and dress, and I’m arranging the ceremony and writing the scripts they will say and I will say. They get the final edit, of course. There’s a lot of stuff flying back and forth over email during the next few months, but it’ll all be worth it in the end.
I’ve been ordering supplies of my own for the ceremony itself. I’ve got myself a proper Athame, and a broom. They already have certain smudge sticks and other cleansing supplies, and we’re negotiating what sort of candles we’re going to use and where we’re going to place things and all the rest of it.
Weddings of any sort are complicated, and involve a lot of compromise on behalf of the bride and groom, or in this case brides.
I know when we were getting married my family and his family were all telling us that the wedding was all about us, but really weddings are all about everyone else a lot of the time. The secret is to find a compromise and at least make sure that you’re going to have an enjoyable day.

As someone trying to plan a nontraditional and “fun” wedding, I totally hear you! On the off-chance they don’t know about it, you should recommend the book/website The Offbeat Bride to your friends. It’s become my wedding bible, and it’s full of ideas for the kinds of ceremonies that wedding mags don’t cover.

I will suggest that to them. Thank you.
