Six Weird Things

June 10th, 2007

I was tagged by Ranee to tell you six weird things you probably didn’t know about me.

This is going to be an interesting one for me to try and write. I’m never sure what to say on things like this. I tend to think I’m boring.

1. I am currently watching The Fountain.
Which is a very strange and interesting movie. I saw the preview for it a while ago and knew I had to watch the film because the subject matter appeared to be about reincarnation, which is always something which fascinates me. The film is not quite what I’d anticipated from the previews but it’s still fascinating.

2. I encountered my first ghost when I was 13.
We were living in a rented bungalow before we emigrated. Prior to this I’d always felt there were ghosts and other things but nothing I had done had caused any to emerge that I could see. The bungalow we were renting had previously been owned by an elderly couple who died soon after each other. Our landlords had bought the place to be their retirement home but wound up staying on at their job, so while we lived there they were having renovations done.
We had some builders in knocking down our back porch and building a new one. The day they started knocking down the old porch I started hearing a woman humming in the hallway even though I was home by myself (aside from the builders) as it was summer holidays. Things have progressed from there with me with regards ghosts, spirits, predictions and the like.

3. We got my son’s name from a zombie movie.
I know it sounds really weird, but then this is the sort of people we are. My husband and I love horror movies, and when Shaun of the Dead came out we had to watch it. My husband heard the name in question as one of the bit characters who showed up for maybe five minutes and adopted it for a character in a game I was running. I really liked the name, and when my husband and I were arguing discussing name options that name was our compromise.
So, his name is Declan (pronounced DECK-lan, not DEE-clan or DUH-clan).
It’s an old Irish name, which worked out very well as my husband’s family is Irish although we joke he’ll be fighting with himself because I’m half Scottish.
Our poor son is third generation Irish immigrant and first generation Scottish/English (British). We joke he’s doomed to be a drunkard. It didn’t help matters that when I was checking out at the grocery store and one of the cashiers heard his name, she asked me if we’d got the name from “Kyle XY” so I had to go look that up and watch it. The character named Declan in that show, in the first few episodes is shown to be a teenage alcoholic, and all round bad influence on the main family’s daughter ;_;.
We’re not even getting into the health issue genes that we’ve passed down to him :( or that his middle name is also that of a vampire in certain genres.

4. I’m allergic to brown soda.
We still have no idea why this is or what it is that causes this problem; but I can’t drink any colas just clear drinks and my elixir (Mountain Dew), if I drink Pepsi or Coke or Root Beer I get sick.

5. I’m a pack rat (real and digital)
Though I’m trying to get better at it. Hopefully this next move will help some more with that. I’ve already thrown out about five rubbish bags full of junk, along with the regular daily grind of things which get pitched, drink bottles, diapers and so on. Still…I think we could probably throw out half the stuff we have because it never gets used I just have an unhealthy attachment to things. It’s the same with files too. My husband and I just had a discussion the other night because I burned about 4 gigs worth of screen captures (mostly Doctor Who) off the hard drive onto a data DVD to free up space.
“Why don’t you just delete them?”
“I might need them later.”
“Why?”
“…um…for icons?”
“How many icons are you going to MAKE with 8000+ screen captures??”

6. I know how to crochet.
Well, hey, it’s random and weird and something I just thought of. I do know how to crochet, mostly chains and squares, but I was shown, and someone I actually may have some crochet hooks (yay pack-rat-ness?). I think my Mum may have them still and my knitting needles, because I also know how to knit and sew (technically) but I’m lazy :-p and haven’t really kept up with practice on that. I can at least sew buttons back on, and stitch up ripped hems though, so that’s handy.

  2. Angie

I have never heard of anyone with dark soda allergy. That’s so interesting. It’s one of those tidbits that makes me head right over to a search engine to do some research.

I can crochet a chain link, then I’m done, or end up with a triangle! Brown soda? I have issue with beer for some reason, but not until 3 o’clock in the morning! I don’t drink anymore, so that solved that issue. As for a pack rat, have you met my husband? LOL

I enjoy and casually read Tarot cards, my favorite deck is my Cosmic Tribe Tarot. Love the artwork on it. Also have a small Rider-Waite deck

I like the name Declan! I need to respectfully decline the tag though, because I just did this one recently!
