Week 5

June 1st, 2006

Things have been going both good and bad. At last weeks month check-up I thought we were ‘out of the woods’ with regards to the problems with feeding and his stomach given he was back up to 9lbs and had grown to 22 1/2 inches (which is 75-90th percentile for growth at his age). His pediatrician said that’s really not enough weight gain because he’s supposed to be gaining an ounce a day, and he hasn’t done that. By a month old he should have made back his birth weight if not passed it, and he hasn’t.
So, we had to go for blood tests and he gave us formula to start supplementing him with. He took a couple of days to start not fussing about the formula, but while Dr. N said he should be drinking 1-2 oz of milk per feeding and perhaps I wasn’t making enough it turns out he’s eating 3-4 oz per feeding sometimes more, as shown on the bottles.

On the upside he’s a little ahead of the markers developmentally. He can roll over, lift his head up when on his tummy on his floor mat, and even scoot himself forward a few inches if he really works at it. He’s recognizing us when we talk to him, and smiling, and has started making noises other than crying. So, I’m not as worried as I first was when Dr. N. said he wasn’t eating enough.

We got the results of the bloodwork back on Tuesday and all his levels were low, protein etc. So, it looks like, hopefully, it was just that I couldn’t make enough milk to keep up with his appetite. We’ll find out today at this morning’s ped appt if this is true, because he’s scheduled for another weight check. He had been a little constipated, which I hope was just diet adjustment, and I have been trying to still feed him my milk as well at least once a day, and doing other things to keep up production on my end in the hopes we won’t have to have so much formula (because it IS expensive and not as good for him, I mean it’s not BAD for him, but anyway…)

Wish us luck at the doctors!
